D-Rat Competition

It's time to start trapping!

RULES:

➞ The competition is open to Kids (up to 14) and Youth/Adults (over 14's)

➞ You can register an unlimited number of traps: D-Rat, Snap E, Victor Trap in Tunnels or DOC200  (but how many traps can you set?!).

➞ Enter by Recording your trap(s) and all catches on TRAP.NZ in the Karekare Landcare Project.

Please load a photo of your catch!

➞The traps need to be set on your own property or you need to get permission from the landowner.

➞ The Geographical area is limited to Lone Kauri School kids and Karekare Residents (you need to leave on Karekare Road, Lone Kauri Road, La Trobe Track, Nixon Track, Farm Road, Waikarekare Lane, or Watchman Road).

➞ If you’re going away for work or holidays, feel free to get someone to look after your trap.

➞ If you catch a monster rat, get a photo of it lying next to a ruler or tape measurer to verify length (measure your catch in cm, please).

The competition will run from Thursday the 1st of June to Thursday the 31st of August.

Trapping Hot spots:

➞ Around rubbish, compost & woodpiles.

➞ Along a wall, fence line, stream, paths, ridges

➞ Find a spot where you have seen or heard evidence of introduced predators:

Mouse or rat droppings, rat scratching noises, holes, or nibbled food…

➞ Choose a Dry & Sunny spot - Rats like to see light at the end of the tunnel.

➞ If you are not having success trapping, try moving the trap to a different area.

➞ Where a chew card has been eaten is often a good spot! So do some tests by placing chew cards around your property before choosing the best trap locations.

Find out more about chew cards here.

Tips and tricks:

➞ Make sure your trap is level and stable, and the entrance is cleared.

➞ What to use for bait? Peanut butter, chocolate paste, cheese, nuts, cinnamon porridge, mayo… and add a wee taste at the start of the tunnel to lure them in.

Feel free to experiment! And refresh your bait weekly.
